The Jet Stream Bass Drivers redesigned for 2025
In 2012, we were introduced to Tim Hill, a visionary designer whose creation, the Jet Stream, would forever change the landscape of high-end hi-fi systems. This remarkable system, priced at nearly £100,000, is testament to both engineering excellence and design, combining cutting-edge audio performance with striking aesthetics. The Jet Stream’s defining feature is its horn-loaded speakers, crafted from large, transparent acrylic horns. Despite their imposing size, the system has an ethereal, minimalist quality.
The system is further enhanced by two bass speakers, housed in stunning transparent spheres, which deliver a deep, immersive low-end that perfectly complements the horn speakers. Originally designed by Volt, this year the bass drivers have been redesigned to further improve both performance and aesthetics. This refinement focused on further enhancing the bass response whilst maintaining the integrity of the system's minimal transparent appearance
One of the key improvements comes in the form of a lighter, neo-array magnet assembly. This update increases airflow to the voice coil, allowing for even more precise control of the bass frequencies. In fact, thanks to the transparent enclosures, listeners can actually see the voice coil in motion—an incredible visual and acoustic experience that few systems can match.
The bass driver now boasts a resonant frequency of 25Hz and a total Q of 0.5, specifically tuned to work in harmony with the system’s full-range speakers. This careful integration ensures that the entire system, from the high frequencies to the deep bass, operates in seamless synergy. The result? A listening experience that is as visually captivating as it is sonically flawless.
This is one of many bespoke drivers we have designed at Volt Loudspeakers over the years. If you would like a bespoke drive unit designed from the ground up contact us or head the design section to find out more about how we can help.
